Hopefully by now you've checked out the video for Eskimo Disco's brilliant 7-11, available from the PSP Store. Now it's time to meet the band...
Eskimo Disco are one of the most exciting up and coming bands around at the moment. Playing their infectious party music at warehouse parties, clubs and festivals across the UK for the past two years, they have developed their music into a powerful live show (and been named "one of the live bands of the year" by Playlouder.com). Their debut single, 7-11, features a brilliant video starring Pingu the penguin that you can now download from the PSP Store. Read on for the band's thoughts on music, downloading and what it's like working with Pingu...
How did you get started as a band?
We all met at this warehouse party a few years back when we were all DJing. We had similar tastes in music and all had the same vision of creating a live band that could play at all these house parties we were DJing at. We wanted to make upbeat music that people would dance their heads off too. A band that you wanted to go and see on a Friday night.
How did you decide on Eskimo Disco as a name? Were there any great alternatives that you rejected?
We are massive Daft Punk fans and we kind of nicked their idea, putting two words together that sounded a bit random but that created some kind of imagery. I can't remember any of the names we didn't go with, not sure there were any great alternatives, I know there were a lot of rubbish ones though.
How would you describe your sound to anyone who has yet to hear Eskimo Disco?
I think we're classed as indie electro but it's really hard to put the music into one category as it's quite an eclectic sound. For us, it's about writing good pop songs, and they could be indie electro, they could be folk dance, they could be disco pop, probably not German techno but you never know...
Who are your musical influences?
We have loads of influences from old bands like 10CC and Kraftwerk, to Daft Punk and Justice. We also love loads of guitar bands like The Flaming Lips, Interpol, and Radiohead.
You guys are well known for your energetic and visual live shows. What do you want people to get out of an Eskimo Disco gig?
We want people to come and party at our gigs. Our favourite shows are always at the weekend where people are up for dancing. We also like to make it as much of a show as possible with lights, visuals and various onstage toys. We've got a few new ideas for this year so watch this space...
How did the video for 7-11 come about?
Our manager Jeff had been thinking for a while that we should get in touch with the people that make Pingu as we were all big fans of the programme when we were at university and there was obviously the link with the name Eskimo Disco. So we sent them an email and the next thing we're in this big boardroom with all these people talking about working together.
We worked on this viral campaign with them that got 80,000 downloads, so the agency then decided that they wanted to make a music video for us.
What were your favourite albums of 2006?
The Flaming Lips' At War With The Mystics, Hot Chip's The Warning and The Guillemots Through The Window Pane are the only albums that we agree on as a band were great in 2006. I'm really looking forward to the Justice album this year, and I was looking forward to the Air album as well but apparently it's not very good which is a real shame. I was expecting big things.
Do you play videogames? If so, what are some of your favourites?
We have a PS2 in the studio and play a lot of football and driving games. I've also got a bit of a thing for Tiger Woods Golf, it's well addictive and the best golf game I've ever played. It's a good thing that we're recording the album now actually because I think productivity will definitely slacken once the PS3 enters our lives. Think it will be an essential on the tour bus later in the year.
What kind of game would be soundtracked by Eskimo Disco's music?
Not sure if people remember the game Leisure Suit Larry, it was a classic role playing game where you had to go around chatting up girls and partying in hotel rooms, I think we could probably do a good soundtrack for that.
How do you feel downloads are affecting music?
I think it's a really good thing that I can now go on iTunes and listen to lots of different music and then buy it there and then. I can see it being the future, definitely, but there is still something really great about going into a shop and buying a physical CD or LP. I get more excited about seeing our vinyl in HMV that I do about seeing our music on iTunes, for the moment at least.
What does 2007 have in store for Eskimo Disco?
We're in the studio at the moment finishing off our debut album with Howard Gray (ex Apollo 440) which we're really happy with. Our next single comes out in April and then we'll be on the road for most of the summer at all the festivals in the UK and Europe. We missed out on loads of the festivals last year so we're planning to make up for it this year.
Be sure to check out the video for 7-11 over in the PSP Store!
