Get a jump start in the land of Eorzea with these top tips.
For adventure on an epic scale, there's not much that can match the magnificent FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. The FINAL FANTASY series didn't get to where it is today - at the top of many players' "Best Ever" lists - without good reason. A Realm Reborn takes the best elements of previous FINAL FANTASY games and reworks them for a massively multiplayer online experience like no other.
The land of Eorzea may seem a little daunting to new players - so use these tips to get a head start. You'll be slaying huge beasts in no time.
Why should I customise my character?
At the start of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, you can choose your character's race and class before customising their appearance and attributes. This is important: creating your own character sets you apart from fellow players around the world, while your choice of class will affect how you perform in battle.
The key thing to remember is that character classes will impact where you start your adventure as well as the potential strengths of your character. For example, if your character starts as a Pugilist, they will be better suited to close combat, while the Thaumaturge shows talent as an attacker from a distance. Both the Pugilist and Thaumaturge start out in the desert city of Ul'dah.
Each class is associated with certain weapons and armaments, and the class you choose will affect which of your character's attributes develop most quickly - but don't worry, you can always change class by equipping a different weapon.
What is XP and why do I need it?
Eorzea is a big and wildly beautiful place, and it's tempting to dive straight in and gorge yourself on its many marvels. Remember though, the best fun comes from matching quests and challenges to your current class level.
XP is central to building your skills. You'll start out as a novice fighter; soon, however, the foes you face and friends you meet will help you evolve into a wiser warrior, battle-hardened in all the right ways. As you complete quests and defeat foes, experience (in the form of "XP") will begin to flow your way, and can be used to enhance your power and abilities.
What's the best strategy for a new starter?
Don't run before you can walk. Taking on monsters that are way out of your league will only end in tears (and not for the monster). Pace yourself, build up your strength and be patient: before long you'll be a veteran ready to take on anyone and anything.
I keep getting battered. How can I improve my chances in battle?
Rule number one is to continually upgrade your equipment - this will certainly help when battling monsters at a similar level to your own.
For more taxing fights - battle tactically. Combat in FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn is an enticing prospect. Gargantuan winged beasts and flaming swords are just the sort of thing to set pulses racing and see you throw caution to the wind - but don't forget to think tactically when starting an assault.
Look out especially for AoE (Area of Effect) attacks, represented on-screen by a glowing yellow/green circle on the ground that marks where the blow will fall. These assaults are often lethal, so take that coloured ring as a warning and hotfoot it out of the way.
Is it easier to go it alone?
You can have a blast in Eorzea completing quests on your own, and it is possible to play a large amount of the game solo. However, no hero is an island, and while it's always fun to do a spot of solo exploring (and grab whatever glory you can for yourself), sometimes an enemy is simply too big, bad and brutal to take on alone.
Co-operating with fellow adventurers to overcome evil will earn rewards for everyone involved - and who knows, you might forge a bond that will prove life-saving later on.
How can I find allies to fight alongside me?
The first thing to note is that, if you want to team up with friends from the outset, you'll all need to choose character classes that start in the same city. If you don't mind beginning the adventure solo, you can easily find friends and forge bonds later on.
One of the best ways to hook up with fellow adventurers is by joining a Free Company. A Free Company is a kind of band of adventurers; to create one, you'll need to have achieved at least level 25, have four starting members and 15,000 Gil (the in-game currency). If that's not possible, however, you can join an existing Free Company at any time, by applying or being invited to do so.
