Bentley, the brains behind the Cooper Gang, shares nine handy hints for a perfect crime in The Sly Trilogy on PS Vita.
Bentley here, tech-genius and strategist supreme of the Cooper Gang – and I'm going to share a few top tips with you on making a clean getaway in The Sly Trilogy for PlayStation Vita. My old buddy Sly relies on me to be his eyes and ears when he's on a heist, so read on for some tricks of the trade...
This is the first big heist in our sneaky series, but that doesn't mean you have to be a novice thief. The Fiendish Five have made off with Sly's manual for mischief, the Thievius Raccoonus, and you'll need a few tips to get it back...
Tip 1: Keep your eyes and ears open
Master thieves like Sly have a special sense that only the sneakiest raccoons possess. If you see a glowing blue trail, hold down the Circle button and the path you need to take will become clear. It's just as important to use your ears as your eyes; a change of tempo in the background music could mean that you've been spotted by a bad guy.
Tip 2: Take your time
When you're making your way in and out of high security areas, you won't get far if you thunder in like Murray on his way to the pizza parlour. Watch out for searchlights, laser beams, guards and all sorts of other obstacles designed to catch thieves like Sly. Take your time to study how things work and learn their patterns – then, when the coast is clear, make your move.
Tip 3: Collect every clue
The more clues that you can get your paws on in each mission, the better a thief Sly will become. Sly sends each clue back to me to piece together, so that I can work out the code that'll open the vaults found in each level.
Inside the vaults are all sorts of useful items – like a page from the Thievius Raccoonus that'll teach you a new technique, or a blueprint of a villain's hideout so you'll know exactly where all those valuable clues and items are hidden.
Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Defeating the Fiendish Five and destroying Clockwerk was just the start of our adventures. When the Klaww Gang stole the parts of Clockwerk for their own dastardly plan, Sly needed to step up his thieving skills to foil them – and even needed to call in some help from his old pals...
Tip 1: Read the signs
Keeping a close eye on your thief meter will tell you if danger is nearby. You'll notice a yellow glow coming from it whenever a bad guy is close, so as soon as that happens you'll need to come up with a plan. Running away too quickly risks being spotted – you might be much better off finding a good hiding place and waiting it out.
Tip 2: Keep your fingers light
When pickpocketing an enemy it's important to stay as quiet as possible; lifting an enemy's loot is a high-risk manoeuvre, so make sure it's worth it – you'll know if someone is carrying goodies by the yellow glow from their belt.
Tip 3: Choose the best man for the job
Different situations call for different skills, so carefully choose which member of the gang you control. Sly is great and climbing, jumping and generally being a daredevil, while Murray... not so much. He's a great getaway driver though, and really strong – so he can knock enemies down easily.
I'm really more of a back-room guy – the brains of the operation you might say, so I prefer to do things from a distance with all my weapons and gadgets.
Sly 3: Honour Among Thieves
With the Thievius Raccoonus back in Sly's paws, it was time to track down the location of the Cooper Vault, where all of Sly's family riches are stashed. But with the evil Dr M trying to get at the stash as well, we had a fight on our hands...
Tip 1: Spend your loot
You'll stand a much better chance against Dr M's minions if you purchase upgrades from the ThiefNet store that you can access while resting in any safe house. You'll need coins for this, of course, so head back into any levels that have plenty of loot scattered around. The "Dead Men Tell No Tales" level is particularly good for a quick buck.
Tip 2: Trust your cane
Sly's cane has been passed down through the Cooper Clan for generations and can get him out of all sorts of scrapes by latching on to pipes, ledges and anything else that can be climbed, or by bashing an enemy and knocking them out cold. When you need to stay silent, try performing a dive attack on an unsuspecting bad guy – they'll never know what hit 'em.
Tip 3: Learn new skills
Murray and I have learned some cool new abilities that can come in handy in certain situations. Murray's always loved destroying everything in his path, and his new rolling ball technique lets him smash things up in double quick time.
Since I got my gadget-packed new wheelchair, I've got a few more tricks in my shell too – like a powerful sleeping serum and the ability to jump extra high; when you use these skills is up to you, but some levels will need a specific ability to get the gang to safety.
