Keep your feet on the ground in this gravity defying PlayStation 3 sci-fi adventure with our essential interplanetary pointers.
Stay on target
As a Lombax, Ratchet is gifted with incredible agility and devastatingly good aim. Which means you can jump, flip and shoot without missing your target as long as you're generally pointing in the right direction of your enemy. Hold down the L1 button when you're in combat, keep leaping and blast away - your enemies won't stand a chance.
Bolts enhance your current arsenal and help you buy new weapons, so collecting as many of them as you can is the only way you're going to survive the tougher parts of Ratchet & Clank: NEXUS. Thankfully, there are millions of bolts just waiting to be picked up throughout the game. Don't be afraid to smash everything, including maintenance droids and security screens, for some hassle free bolts at the start of your adventure.
Ratchet up your arsenal with Raritanium
See something shiny and blue? It's likely to be Raritanium, a precious ore which can upgrade Ratchet's gear to its full potential. You'll naturally gain Raritanium while you collect bolts on your journey, but to really get ahead you'll need to find the hidden Raritanium on each planet. There are plenty of nooks and crannies where it could be crammed away, so keep an eye out for that magical blue glow while you're baddie bashing.
Get used to gravity... and the lack of it
Practise the Grav-Leap skill during your early missions until you're entirely comfortable with how it works. You'll be forced to use this dizzying ability under pressure later in the game, so knowing how to handle it without panicking will keep Ratchet and Clank much safer in the long run.
Ratchet & Clank: NEXUS is designed to make sure you don't get too stuck, so if you've forgotten your current mission objective, press the START button to bring up the pause screen for a brief reminder. It'll also tell you how close you are to completing the stage.
Have a blast
Your friendly neighbourhood gadgets dealer always gives you the chance to try out a new weapon before you buy it. Gain extra bolts for any enemies you zap on the shooting range while you're trying out the weapon. You won't take any damage from enemies but the trial ends after a set period of time, so blast as many bots as you can to get some free bolts before you're booted out.
Get crushing on Kragg
If you're finding things a bit difficult, toughen up in the gladiator arena of Destructapalooza on Planet Kragg. There you'll win bolts and gadgets. Even if you don't succeed in all the trials, the intense combat will give you experience points to upgrade your weaponry.
Outrun the beast of the Netherverse
Every once in a while you'll have to enter the warped world Netherverse as Ratchet's trusty robot buddy, Clank. Navigate through a dangerous platform style level to wake a slumbering beast, who will then chase you back to the exit.
Getting through the level successfully is all about mastering Clank's ability to manipulate gravity. You can quickly zip around the health sapping hazards by changing gravity before the little robot touches a surface. Combine this with Clank's slow motion ability and you can almost make him fly through a level without the need to jump over obstacles.
Once you get the monster's attention, concentrate on getting back to the exit as quickly as possible. The beast will follow you no matter how complicated your route is, so pile on the speed so it doesn't have the chance to bite on a shiny metal snack.
Power up on the move
Grab your mobile device and download Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus to get one step ahead of space criminals Vendra and Neftin Prog. Swipe across the touchscreen to leap from rail to rail and avoid obstacles, while shooting enemies with your blaster. Make sure you collect bolts, and don't forget to pick up any Raritanium, which can be synced with your Sony Entertainment Network account and used in Ratchet & Clank: NEXUS on PS3.
Download Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus from the App Store and Google Play when it becomes available in late November 2013.
Giving nightmares to the enemy
One of the handiest weapons you'll pick up from the friendly shop vendor is the Nightmare Box. This freakish gadget pops out a terrifying creature designed to scare the pants off any nearby thugs, but as you upgrade the weapon, it becomes more durable and even shoots lasers at your enemies. It's perfect for distracting foes and tough bosses, leaving you free to blast them from a distance. You're not here to play fair - the galaxy is at stake.
