If you keep getting caught out in rain, check out these helpful tips for this haunting PlayStation 3 adventure from game producer, Noriko Umemura.
rain™ is an enchanting tale of a young boy suddenly turned invisible, pursued through the dark, wet streets by hideous creatures as he tries to save an invisible girl. It's available to download now from PlayStation Store, and we spoke to Noriko Umemura from Japan Studio for some top tips on getting through the early parts of the game...
An ordinary boy, an extraordinary adventure
The main character of rain is a young boy who has somehow become invisible. He's 10 years-old – so he has the same physical abilities that a normal 10 year-old would have; he can run, jump and climb, but only over obstacles that match his size, so look around for a route through the streets that he'll be able to manage.
Follow the footprints
Since becoming invisible, the only way the boy can be seen is by stepping into the pouring rain so that his silhouette appears. When he steps under cover where the rain doesn't fall he disappears completely, so you'll have to watch out for his footprints on the floor, or the movements of objects that he disturbs to find out where he is.
Beware of the dog
At the beginning of chapter one, you have to chase the girl through the streets as she's pursued by a dangerous monster. She moves quickly, so run to keep up. You'll soon come across some of the beast that are trying to catch her; they appear as the invisible outlines of dog-like creatures, patrolling their territory and pouncing on the boy if he's spotted. Use cover to control the boy's visibility and only move when the creatures can't see him.
Get to know the Unknown
When you've made it past the monsters, you'll encounter a towering enemy called the Unknown. He's much larger, faster and more powerful than the other creatures and he'll relentlessly pursue the children whenever he sees or hears them, so always stay hidden if you can. Look out for shelter, doors, cabinets or lockers to hide inside whenever the Unknown is around and wait for him to pass.
Cause a distraction
The monsters that are hunting the children are attracted to sound – if you run through a large puddle and make a splash, this can give your position away and make them give chase. This can also work to your advantage – sometimes you will have to make as much noise as possible to lure the creatures away from a certain area, so look out for anything that might make a loud sound and think about how you can use it.
