War is your business
What talks louder than assault rifles and hand grenades? Money... As gun-for-hire Arran Danner, your only loyalty is to your next pay cheque, and in a bitter interplanetary war, there are plenty of bidders for your services.
The year is 2357, and Helghast forces have stormed Vekta, tearing apart its defences and scattering shattered ISA troops across the planet. The ISA need all the help they can get – and it doesn't come cheap.
Every kill, every contract earns you a handsome bank credit as you fight back-to-back with both sides. But when a rescue mission in southern Vekta – where the war is at its fiercest – pits you into a power struggle for the life of an innocent young boy, you begin to wonder whether some may be paying too high a price, even as your own financial gains grow.
Welcome to Killzone Mercenary, where the battle lines are blurred and heroes serve alongside traitors. There's never been a better time to be a soldier of fortune.
Both sides of the bullet
Your perspective of this war is unlike anybody else's. Driven by cold, hard cash rather than any one general's strategy, you'll see both sides of the conflict, from the clinical, relentless Helghast war machine to last-ditch ISA rearguards through Vekta's abandoned cities.
Developer Guerrilla Cambridge has created a world rich in detail and heavy with the sense of a civilisation being systematically crushed underfoot. One minute you're infiltrating a besieged embassy, its mighty walls no defence against determined Helghast shock troops, the next you're sprinting for a drop ship that'll ferry you to an audacious assault on a vast reactor.
Through it all it's easy to forget you're playing Killzone Mercenary on PlayStation Vita and not at home on PlayStation 3. The game looks spectacular on that pin-sharp touchscreen, while the swirling soundtrack complements the coughs of multiple machine guns, and as you get caught up in your whirlwind private war you'd be forgiven for ending up several bus stops beyond your destination.
Honour? Freedom? Or money?
Vekta's burning, and that means you'll get your next contract even as your last objective explodes behind you. Often you'll be dropped right into the midst of an enemy installation where you're faced with a choice: bring your weapons to bear with the precision of dual sticks or use the sharpest tool your PS Vita offers.
Brutal melees let you carve a silent, lethal path through the battlefield with a tap of the Triangle button and a swipe across the touchscreen. You'll reduce enemy numbers without drawing attention to yourself and rack up a cash bonus which will help forge a strong relationship with your most important ally.
Blackjack is a shadowy arms dealer whose secret armouries stock everything you need to get the job done – at a price, of course. Whether it's an armour-piercing sniper rifle complete with rear touch pad zoom, blast resistant body shielding or VAN-Guard combat systems, such as the deadly Sky Fury orbital beam, Blackjack has the gear to swing a vicious firefight your way.
Hacking mini-games, hidden intel and special Valour Cards – which reward your accuracy and speed with bonus credit – mean there's every reason to return to the battlefield in this unforgettable debut for the Killzone series on PS Vita. That's if your conscience allows it.
No friends in no-man's-land
Every single Vektan Dollar you earn in the single player campaign carries over into the multiplayer mode, which means you'll be paying Blackjack plenty of visits even after your contracts have been completed. Look out for Valour Cards on the bodies of the fallen in these modes:
Mercenary Warfare: A brutal free-for-all where the aim is to rack up the cash before the clock hits zero. It's every man for himself here; whether you're playing with close friends or fierce enemies, you can't afford to hesitate on the trigger.
Guerrilla Warfare: Pick your side – ISA or Helghast – then join with your comrades to destroy the enemy in this team-based death match. The team with the highest target count is victorious.
Warzone: A series of five demanding missions awaits as two teams square up to each other. Each mission requires its own tactics and teamwork to complete; the scores are then compiled from each aspect of this epic battle to discover the overall winner.
