What It's Like To Play

Move with the action

Presentation

Move with the action

Modern Combat: Domination can be played using either a wireless controller or a PlayStation Move motion controller. Using the wireless controller will feel familiar to fans of first-person shooters. Use the left stick to move your character around and the right stick to control the camera. To fire, simply hold down the R1 button. For a more precise shot using your gun's scope, hold down the L1 button. If you want to really test your first-person shooter skills then opt to play the game using your PlayStation Move motion controller.

The most important thing you need to do before hitting the battlefields is to calibrate your motion controller. Once you have done that, you're ready for war. Using PlayStation Move, you can aim at enemies on-screen and fire at them by holding down the Move button. To move your character around the map you can use either a wireless controller or a PlayStation Move navigation controller.

Getting to grips with the PlayStation Move controls in Modern Combat: Domination can take a little getting used to, so the best way to practise before taking the fight online is to play as many offline matches as possible using computer-controlled opponents for target practice. That way, you can hone your skills and show your friends and other players on PlayStation Network just how adept you are with PlayStation Move.

Gameplay

Armour up

In Modern Combat: Domination you have a sizeable arsenal to hand, which has been painstakingly modelled on real-world military weapons by the developer. These tools of destruction include pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles and explosive devices.

Before each mission you'll be given the chance to choose from two factions: Special Forces or Mercenaries. With 2,400 dollars to spend at the outset of the game you'll only be able to choose from a small line-up of weapons and combat kit such as a machine gun, pistol and body armour.

Play a few matches, win some money and you'll soon be able to get your hands on some of the more powerful weapons like the shotgun. The more opponents you take down in each match, the more experience points you'll gain, which in turn allows you to access various upgrades for your weapons. Don't be shy in battle and get stuck in because the experience points really pay off.

Multiplayer

Online battlefields

Modern Combat: Domination is a multiplayer game on PlayStation 3 that pits you and up to 15 other players from around the globe against each other via PlayStation Network. While the game can be played offline against computer-controlled opponents, developer Gameloft constructed Modern Combat to create an adrenaline-fuelled PlayStation Network experience. If you want to play offline, use the time to hone your skills before going online to take on challengers from around the world.

Featuring five multiplayer maps - two in North America and three in the Middle East - Modern Combat: Domination includes a variety of online modes for you to test your combat skills in. These include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Extraction. The remaining modes are Boom and Bust, and Escort.

While Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are online modes found in many first-person shooters, Boom and Bust mixes things up by pitting teams against each other in a race to either defuse or defend a nuclear missile. It's tense and requires a fast trigger finger; otherwise you'll find yourself on the sidelines watching the remainder of the battle unfold before being allowed to join the next match.
