All the latest Blu-ray Disc news for movie fans everywhere

PlayStation 3 owners not only have access to all the great next generation game experiences available on PS3, thanks to the built in Blu-ray Disc player, they can access a world of 1080p High Definition entertainment. Here's all the latest news from the wonderful world of Blu-ray.

Warner Brothers go Blu-ray

Warner Brothers, the studio behind such films as the Harry Potter series, I Am Legend and the upcoming Batman sequel The Dark Knight, announced at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that they would now be releasing their movies exclusively on Blu-ray Disc. Warner bring New Line Cinema along with them (the studio behind The Golden Compass, Austin Powers and the Lord of the Rings trilogy) and join Disney, MGM, 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures who are all producing High Definition movies exclusively for Blu-ray Disc.

2008 on Blu-ray

2008 is shaping up to be a great year for Blu-ray. Worldwide President of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, David Bishop believes that it will be a watershed year for the format: a period when Blu-ray's full entertainment potential is realised. "Last year, we concentrated on achieving the very best audio and video quality on our

Blu-ray releases. This year, you will see us fulfill the overall promise of Blu-ray Disc. You will see much more interactivity and many more usage models," reported Bishop.

"For example, this year we will develop the ability to take a Blu-ray Disc and load it into a PS3 and then copy the movie to your PSP for mobile usage. Also, we will offer more downloadable content over the Internet - not just when you first buy the disc, but rather on a long-term on-going basis. What we have planned at Sony Pictures with Blu-ray Disc is exciting and new: it never existed with DVD," concluded David Bishop.

Portable Copy

This feature was indeed announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Known as Portable Copy, this allows you to use your PlayStation 3 to make an optimised Standard Definition copy of a Blu-ray Disc movie to play on your PSP. So soon you'll be able to take your Blu-ray Disc movie collection with you wherever you go.

New releases

Don't forget, there are always movies being released on Blu-ray Disc, from brand new blockbusters to classic films being made available in High Definition for the first time. Titles coming soon on Blu-ray include The Assassination of Jesse James, We Own the Night, No Country for Old Men and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, in addition to a back catalogue that is already over 500 titles strong and growing all the time. So if you haven't dipped your toes into the waters of Blu-ray yet, now is the perfect time to start experiencing the next generation of High Definition entertainment.
