Join us for a test drive of the world's most realistic and diverse driving simulator.
Start your engine
Fasten your seatbelts; Gran Turismo 6 has arrived on the starting grid.
And after 15 years in the fast lane, the latest instalment is every bit the finely tuned homage to real-life racing the world has come to expect.
Your new racing career will begin with a refresher course in the basics like cornering, how to pick a racing line and some tactics for overtaking. You'll earn up to three stars per event depending on how you perform, as well as an amount of credits which can be used to buy and upgrade vehicles.
Succeed in these early stages and you'll soon have enough stars to apply for your first licence; pass the tests and you'll progress to the next tier of races.
And this is where the game really opens up, as all sorts of special events, racing festivals and mini-games vie for your attention after you finish each race.
Under the hood
The sheer amount of ground covered in Gran Turismo is truly impressive. You'll soon learn the nuances of adapting your driving style as you travel the world taking on notorious tracks like the Nurburgring, Circuit de Monaco and Silverstone.
New vehicles will also give you a challenge as you learn their strengths and weaknesses. There's an extensive list of car dealerships and upgradeable parts too, and when you're happy with the look of your machines, Photo Travel mode lets you compose the perfect pictures in scenic locations around the globe.
Beyond the racing events you'd expect to see, there are a handful of playful mini-games that aim to test your driving skills in unusual ways. The star of this quirky line-up is undoubtedly the chance to relive one of humanity's greatest vehicular achievements - driving on the moon.
Yes that's right, Polyphony Digital have applied their precise approach to simulation and created a series of moon challenges, one of which lets you recreate the 1971 journey of David Scott and James Irwin - the first astronauts to drive on the moon.
And the lunar levels are merely the tip of the iceberg when you're looking for a game mode that's a bit different; there are go-karting leagues, classic car festivals, one-make races that level the playing field and even an eco-challenge to see how far you can drive on one litre of fuel.
Drive the future
If the prospect of going for a spin on the moon has caught your attention, then Vision GT will be right up your street. This experimental concept invites car manufacturers to debut their prototypes in GT6 long before they ever make an appearance in a real showroom.
Mercedes-Benz is the first of 25 high-profile car brands to unveil its offering - the futuristic Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo. You can see all sorts of information on the development of the sleek sports car, like the concept art, specs and "making of" videos.
And the best part about the inclusion of these supercars in the game is that you can add them to your garage and use them however and whenever you want.
This virtual glimpse into the future captures the essence of what has kept Gran Turismo fresh over the past 15 years: life-like driving physics, exquisite attention to detail, collaboration with the motoring industry and above all else, a passion for all forms of racing.
