Find out what it's like to play Quantic Dream's stunning action thriller, starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe.
Not like other girls...
If you think you have problems, then spare a thought for poor Jodie Holmes. Bonded to a powerful invisible entity from birth, Jodie is tormented - and in BEYOND: Two Souls on PlayStation 3 you have to guide her through 15 years of her troubled yet extraordinary life.
You'll need your wits about you to successfully navigate Jodie's trials and tribulations. This gripping psychological action thriller is a jigsaw puzzle of disordered fragments that you have to piece together. Each segment contains an important event in Jodie's globetrotting life that can have an effect on her when you play the latter parts.
Does Jodie find love as a teenager? How does her relationship develop with mentor and father figure Professor Nathan Dawkins? Does the mysterious entity lose control during Jodie's junior years? Vital elements like these are all affected by your choices. Jodie's incredible life is totally in your hands. Are you ready to discover what truly lies beyond?
Hollywood talent and video games combine in a revolutionary new way in BEYOND: Two Souls. Starring Academy Award-nominees Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, Quantic Dream's nerve-racking thriller uses groundbreaking technology to capture every aspect of these acclaimed actors' powerful performances.
Page, Dafoe and the rest of BEYOND: Two Souls' cast are utterly convincing as they spiral through the story, with their subtle body language and facial expressions conveying the gut wrenching emotion the tale deserves. And coupled with a stirring soundtrack from movie composers Lorne Balfe and Hans Zimmer, you can't help but feel affected by what you see on-screen. Whether it's a breathless action sequence or a tragic scene of personal rejection, the filmic presentation makes you feel that what you're watching is real.
Quantic Dream doesn't rest on the laurels of its radical technology and Hollywood ties, either. Dynamic camera angles and moody lighting create an intoxicating sense of urgency that has you jumping out of your skin during the scarier moments of the game. There are plenty of thoughtful scenes that you don't often get to see in a video game as well, captured with wonderful - and sometimes heartbreaking - believability.
Two souls, one life
Your actions and choices matter in BEYOND: Two Souls. By controlling Jodie Holmes, your reflexes and judgement are tested in scenarios which range from intense physical training routines to delivering a baby. There's no Game Over screen - so your performance determines the course of Jodie's journey.
Most of the time you're performing context sensitive, on-screen actions using the wireless controller's buttons and motion sensitive controls. Whether you're picking up an item, playing a guitar or responding to a question with multiple choice answers, the on-screen icons give you a clear indication of what you're about to do.
Just as you're getting used to that, the game throws you into a heart-stopping action sequence, where you have seconds to push the right stick in the correct direction to complete Jodie's movement successfully. It perfectly complements the slower, more thoughtful drama-based gameplay and there's a wonderful feeling of satisfaction when you master it.
And then there's Aiden, the ghostly entity that Jodie is tied to. Aiden possesses amazing powers such as controlling other human characters or protecting Jodie with a force field. However, you're an extension of Aiden's will, so your actions as this entity can put Jodie in danger. Your curiosity, anger and wrath are his and if you refuse Jodie's requests you can dramatically alter her fate... but do you have the nerve to deal with the consequences?
Just the two of you
BEYOND: Two Souls gives you plenty of chances to get into its engaging depths, with tutorial demonstrations for its controls and clever use of its non-chronological story to introduce you to techniques which become vital later in the game. However, Quantic Dream has provided even more ways to enjoy its tense thriller, even if you're not familiar with video games.
If you're tired of your mate playing backseat driver to your choices in the game, they can join in by controlling either Jodie or her invisible, supernatural partner, Aiden. Duo mode lets the second player use another wireless controller, and share the thought-provoking decisions BEYOND: Two Souls throws at you.
The second player can also use an iOS or Android mobile device and wireless connection in BEYOND Touch mode, which simplifies the controls. And if you prefer that way of playing, Touch mode can be used in single player too - although you'll miss out on the engaging feedback offered by the DUALSHOCK 3 as it vibrates to convey things such as heartbeats and sudden impacts.
