PlayStation 3 uses Blu-ray Disc, the new disc format that brings High Definition entertainment into the home.
Next generation entertainment needs a next generation format to store the vast amounts of data required to render High Definition game worlds and movies. Blu-ray Disc is that format - and it's fully supported by PlayStation 3.
By using an incredibly accurate blue-violet laser, Blu-ray players like PS3 can read a disc far more accurately than a DVD player. This means that more data can be squeezed onto a Blu-ray Disc (BD), even though it's the same size as a traditional DVD.
A staggering 25 gigabytes of data can be stored on a single Blu-ray Disc (BD), doubling to 50GB on a dual-layer BD. In comparison, DVDs can only store 4.7GB (rising to 8.5GB on a dual-layer DVD).
The huge amount of data storage offered by Blu-ray makes it ideal for High Definition. The ability to access more data means that game makers can embrace the demands of next generation development - ensuring that PlayStation 3 will cater for the most ambitious entertainment experiences in the years to come.
