Bursting at the seams
NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst packs in 100 new missions with their own objectives, 38 new costumes taken from previous downloadable add-on packs, a new playable character – Kabuto – for offline and online battles, and a new chapter in which Sasuke and Itachi team up to take on Kabuto.
Based on the Japanese manga and anime series, Full Burst is a revamped version of Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, and it looks just like an interactive comic book. The beautiful cel-shaded graphics and cutscenes are spectacular and help bring the complex story and its many characters to life.
The tone is set from the cool menu screen, which gives way to a jaw-dropping prologue in Ultimate Adventure mode. Here you battle a gigantic beast called Nine Tails, sprinting across rooftops to get closer to the creature to launch your own attacks while dodging its swipes, roars and deadly orbs. Eventually you're helped by other clans, resulting in hundreds of fire bolts being launched simultaneously at Nine Tails to bring it down.
Fight for freedom
Full Burst combines free movement sections and more traditional fighting segments in Ultimate Adventure mode. In free movement sections you can buy new battle items or collectibles, and talk to characters to advance the story or take on a task.
At certain points in the story you'll face an Ultimate Decision moment, where you can take either the Hero or Legend path. The Hero path is easier but carries fewer rewards, while the Legend path is trickier but lets you use more powerful items. Each path has its own Ninja Tools Pallet too, which you can upgrade and equip exclusive items in.
The key to victory in any battle is keeping an eye on your Chakra gauge. Many moves require Chakra energy, so it's worth absorbing it from enemies, even if doing so leaves you vulnerable to attacks. Other handy moves include the substitution jutsu to teleport away from battle, and an awakening, which, once your health is low enough, channels all your Chakra to boost your attacks and even gain new moves.
Champion of champions
Online Battle is the place that sorts the amateurs from the professional fighters. With a Battle Record screen that reveals all your wins, losses and disconnect rate, there's nowhere to hide and certainly no room for cheating.
Multiplayer is divided into player matches and ranked matches. Player matches take the pressure off somewhat, and are a good way to hone your skills in one-on-one matches or against a series of opponents. You can also participate in a four-player or eight-player tournament. Ranked matches, meanwhile, leave less room for error if you want to rise to the top of the leaderboard.
The multiplayer screen is also where you can check on your collection of Ninja Info cards. Character titles and other details on each card are customisable with parts unlocked in Ultimate Adventure mode, and you can even exchange cards with other players. With 1,000 Ninja Info cards to find, you'll certainly be kept busy trying to collect them all.
