The Snake saga
Not had the chance to experience the astonishing Metal Gear Solid saga that exploded onto PlayStation back in 1998? Then grab yourself a copy of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS3, which includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, all with full trophy support, remastered soundtracks and in sparkling High Definition.
Both Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and its direct sequel Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker are prequels that take place a generation before the series began on PS one, so if you want to experience the Metal Gear timeline in chronological order, we suggest you begin your adventure with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Once you have managed to sneak your way through both games' winding narratives, you can then power up the PlayStation 2 smash hit, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which puts you in control of the mighty Raiden, star of the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on PlayStation 3.
With three full games, countless hours of gameplay and some of the most memorable moments in PlayStation gaming history on one single Blu-ray Disc, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is the definitive Solid Snake experience on PS3.
While the Metal Gear Solid series on PlayStation is notable for its unique characters, epic stories and memorable boss battles, it's most revered for its pioneering of the stealth genre.
Metal Gear Solid is all about sneaking through vast levels without being spotted by your enemies. While you can take on an opponent using Snake's pistol or close quarter combat, the game encourages you to become a true master of tactical espionage by avoiding confrontation as much as possible.
Of course, there are times when you will have no choice but to raise your weapon, and there are plenty of opportunities to do that across the three game games included in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS3.
Each game features its own unique control system, some of which has been updated to reflect the way you play games today, so spend a little time getting used to them before exploring missions further. Learning how to draw your weapon fast and use a health pack on the fly means you're more likely to make it through some of the game's tougher missions - and there are plenty.
Solid Snake on the move
One of the most interesting and unique features exclusive to the PS3 edition of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a system called Transfarring, which is available in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Transfarring allows you to play the game on PS3, save your progress, transfer your save file to your PSP system and continue playing while on the move. That means you can play as Solid Snake anywhere, any time.
While Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are single player experiences, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker features an online co-operative mode that can be played with three other players via PlayStation Network. In co-op mode, all four of you work together to complete either story-based missions or mini-missions called extra-ops.
These include working as a single unit to sneak past enemy patrols or completing various objectives to earn new equipment for you and your teammates. So, make sure you all work together to unlock the best extras for your squad of Solid Snakes - it's worth it.
