Gameplay
Soldiers of fortune
Battlefield 3 features a number of thrilling set pieces that play out across real life locations including Paris, Tehran, New York and Sarajevo. Each mission in the single player campaign is more testing than the next, but thankfully you'll spend most of the time battling alongside a number of squad mates using a range of high-powered weaponry.
Weapons on offer include machine guns, pistols, sniper rifles and a huge selection of explosives such as mines, grenades and rocket launchers. While you'll have plenty of ammo to hand, it's always worth scouring the remains of downed enemies for additional ammunition and new weapons including shotguns that can blast through walls and any light cover that an enemy may be hiding behind.
While you spend the majority of the battles on foot, desperately trying to dodge bullets and stay alive on the battlefield, there are a number of missions in the single player campaign that put you behind the wheel of a vehicle. Once such mission involves you soaring high above the clouds manning the weapons of a jet fighter in an adrenaline fuelled dogfight, while another sees you get behind the controls of a tank, storming enemy bases and battling patrols.
Multiplayer
Battling online
There are a huge range of maps and modes for you to get to grips with in Battlefield 3's online multiplayer mode that can be experienced via PlayStation Network, once you have activated your online pass. The first of these modes is Team Deathmatch, a classic multiplayer mode that pits you and up to 23 of your friends against each other in teams of 12. Team Deathmatch is a great way to ease yourself into the frantic multiplayer experience that is Battlefield 3 because there are no vehicles, just you and your opponents.
In Squad Deathmatch, vehicles play a part in the action as two teams of four fight to eliminate a set number of enemy troopers, while Rush mode requires you to defend M-COM stations on the map from attack. You can up the ante by checking out Squad Rush where two teams of four fight in much tighter spaces or get stuck into massive 32-player battles in the intense Conquest mode, which has appeared in all Battlefield games on PlayStation 3 to date.
Conquest mode is best suited to all-out vehicle warfare, so make sure you know how to handle yourself behind the wheel or in a cockpit. In it, two teams fight for complete control of a number of flags located around the map. The longer you keep control of a flag, the more points your enemy loses. Sounds easy, right? It's not. Conquest mode is definitely one for the hardened Battlefield players that know how to handle themselves when the going gets tough. Good luck, soldier.
