Presentation

Paint the town red

From a flash of its animated main menu screen, Mortal Kombat on PlayStation 3 impresses with spectacular visuals. The grand scale of the tournament is displayed with brilliant animation from both the intimidating fighters and the dynamic locations.

NetherRealm Studios drags you into this fearsome competition with a range of detailed and convincing effects that are memorable and fitting for the brutal world of Mortal Kombat. While each warrior has their own fighting style and mannerisms, they also suffer gruesome battle damage as the fight progresses, complementing the slick looking action. If you have a compatible stereoscopic 3D TV then proceedings become even livelier as weapons, beaten fighters and other elements fly out of the screen during bouts.

All of these visuals are nicely brought together with some bone crunching sound effects, battle taunts and a gravel throated announcer who demands you finish off your opponent after a gruelling fight. It's everything Mortal Kombat fans fondly remember, now with a powerful PS3 polish.

Mortal Kombat packs a massive batch of extras on top of its well presented campaign mode, with extensive training missions and bonus games, statistics for each characters you've used, artwork, music, and sketches of the game's Fatalities. There's plenty to enjoy in this superb brawler to keep you fighting to the very end.

Mortal Kombat has returned. Making its PlayStation 3 debut, the popular beat 'em up series is known for its iconic characters, most of which re-enter the arena for another bash at Kombat glory.

So welcome back the likes of Raiden, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Reptile, Johnny Cage, the soul stealing Shang Tsung, and the ever popular Sub-Zero and Scorpion, from a pool of 26 playable characters. Each has a selection of finishing moves, some of which can be unlocked as you play through the game.

God of War fans also get a fantastic and exclusive treat with Mortal Kombat on PlayStation 3 - you can choose to play as the uncontainable Spartan Kratos in some of the Arcade modes. Equipped with weapons such as the Blades of Olympus, Apollo's Bow and the Nemean Cestus gauntlets, Kratos fits perfectly into the vicious world of Mortal Kombat - and he's only available on PlayStation 3.

Crushing Kombat

Gameplay

Crushing Kombat

Bringing brutality to 2D fighting, Mortal Kombat on PlayStation 3 is an engaging and well designed game which will have you battling for one more go. The secret to its addictive and polished gameplay is a thoughtful blend of deep fighting mechanics and a massive range of features and modes, giving Mortal Kombat an incredible sense of variety.

Full of unique moves for each of the 26 playable characters, this fast paced beat 'em up has the perfect learning curve for veterans and newcomers alike. Featuring easy to learn moves, each fighter brings a different skill set that suits every style of play. For example, Smoke has a range of defensive moves while Kratos is equipped with a mixture of attacks for complex combos. Add these elements to counters, momentum changing X-ray special moves, Fatalities and more and you have the deepest and most tactical Mortal Kombat title yet.

An excellent selection of tutorials ease you into the game, teaching you the basics, letting you master the characters and even practise Fatalities. Once you're ready, you can enjoy a lengthy and wonderfully presented Story Mode (which has you assuming the role of a variety of characters throughout the tale), and the various Arcade modes such as Tag Ladder, which pits your two-person combination against other teams.

Fancy some other diversions? Then you can throw yourself into mini-games such as Test Your Might, or how about trying the Challenge Tower, which features hundreds of tasks, such as landing a number of specific attacks under certain conditions. And this is just scratching the surface. Mortal Kombat is a massive martial arts extravaganza - prepare yourself.

Guts and glory

Multiplayer

Guts and glory

No beat 'em up would be complete without multiplayer modes for you to battle your friends, and Mortal Kombat gives you plenty of options to scratch that fighting itch. Up to four players can duke it out against each other on one PlayStation 3 system in Versus Mode, and up to two players can team up against computer-controlled opponents or battle online against other Mortal Kombat fans via PlayStation Network.

With its deep fighting mechanics and tactics, bouts often take on a balletic grace, made all the more entertaining by Mortal Kombat's flashy special moves. The range of characters and abilities keep the speedy fights balanced, and elements such as X-ray special moves add spice to rivalries. Welcome to a new era of Mortal Kombat - are you ready? Fight!
