The Belly of the Beast
Scorching lava bubbles frantically, strange creatures populate the unfamiliar surroundings and trapped survivors anxiously await rescue. Apoxus Prime is a mining colony complete with a colourful retro look and addictive digital soundtrack to go with it. Unfortunately, this once peaceful world has been turned upside down, swallowed by a terrifying monster and thrust into the dark depths of outer space.
Success in PixelJunk Shooter 2 comes from utilising the elements around you and using your resources to rescue miners and defeat enemies. Lava, gas bubbles and water can all be diverted or moved by blasting through the surrounding walls. Some enemies even turn to liquid when they are shot - perfect if there's any lava or acid lying around that needs cooling down.
This strange world may look bizarre, but the way it works is very logical. Flying through water will slow you down, getting close to lava will heat you up and your DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller will vibrate as the ground shakes and danger approaches.
Every stage will present different challenges and substances for you to experiment with, combined with new enemies, surroundings and surprises.
Have a blast
If you fancy blasting through tons of frantic, action-packed, space-themed mayhem, PixelJunk Shooter 2 is just the ticket. Board your trusty ship and set out to rescue stranded miners trapped in outer space and desperate to go home.
Armed with a never-ending supply of bullets, you navigate your way around each level, take down enemies and quickly rescue the lost miners you come across. Keep your eyes peeled as you won't be able to exit a level until all of your miners have been found. Of course, accidents can happen, and if you hit an innocent worker with a stray bullet or the lava gets to him first, your Casualty Counter will rise. Lose five miners and you'll need to start again.
Lava is always a great way to heat things up. Spend too much time near it and your Heat Gauge will rise, so quickly find some water to cool off in or your ship will be blown to oblivion before your rescue mission is complete. You'll often find that your path to a lost miner is blocked, and this can be resolved with some simple science and forward planning. Combining elements such as lava and water will cause them to solidify, so you can shoot your way through the newly formed rock and rescue your hopeful buddy.
There are loads of extras and awards to collect such as scientists to add to your gallery and treasures to unlock even more levels - so watch out for any hidden bonuses.
Climb the ranks
As well as featuring a two player mode so that you don't have to explore the scary depths of the universe alone, PixelJunk Shooter 2 introduces Online Battle to the PixelJunk series.
Online Battle allows two players to compete against each other in a cat and mouse contest that challenges you to rescue as many lost survivors as possible while your opponent hunts you down and tries to end the mission by destroying your ship. Once the match is over, the hunter becomes the hunted. Swap roles and try to take down your competitor with your own supply of new weapons, power-ups and disrupters.
Sign in to PlayStation Network and take on someone from your PSN Friends List in a Friend Battle or select your opponent at random and compete with them in a League Battle. Earn League Points based on your performance, rise up the League Tables and take on even tougher competitors. You can earn money to purchase more items to use against your opponent, improve your ship and even alter the playing field in this completely new PixelJunk experience.
