Time warped

Story

Time warped

The year is 2010. A powerful and wealthy Russian mercenary has reopened a mysterious research base on Katorga-12, an island off the coast of Siberia. This island was the site of Soviet experimentation in the 1950s that led to a catastrophic, Chernobyl-sized accident - the Singularity - fracturing time itself. Katorga-12 was abandoned, locked down and shrouded in a veil of secrecy until today.

You play as Nate Renko, a US Air Force pilot sent on a recon mission to investigate new, wild readings coming from the mysterious island. Upon your arrival your plane is brought down, and you quickly find yourself in the middle of a massive Russian cover-up that started during the Cold War and continues to threaten all of humanity today. You must fight to survive, and to stop the Singularity from spreading and destroying the world.

Time is on your side

Gameplay

Time is on your side

In Singularity you'll face all manner of enemies throughout your mission including mercenaries and grotesque giant monsters. Weapons at your disposal include pistols, machine guns, rocket launchers, sniper rifles and shotguns. Each of these can be upgraded by collecting Weapon Upgrade cases located throughout the game.

Once you have found an upgrade, simply take it to a weapons station and use it to increase abilities such as clip size, reload times and damage. Alongside these, Singularity also features a number of unique weapons including a useful grenade launcher that allows you to fire off a round and target an enemy for maximum damage.

Another slick gun in your arsenal is the Seeker, a sniper rifle that lets you control the bullet once it has left the chamber. This weapon can be used to neutralize tough enemies at a distance, and for taking out foes hidden behind cover. However, Singularity's primary weapon is the Time Manipulation Device (TMD) that is attached to your arm at the outset of the game. This nifty gadget is powered by material called E-99, which is scattered in huge amounts around the island, so be sure to grab as much as you can to keep it fuelled.

The TMD can age, regenerate or levitate objects and fire a pulse of energy, and plays a hugely important role in solving certain puzzles you'll encounter over the course of your perilous mission. The TMD's powers can be applied to the mutants and soldiers you'll find lurking around the island too, so be sure to use it in combination with your firepower for maximum impact on the battlefield.

Multiplayer

Man versus monster

Singularity features two online multiplayer modes for you and 11 others to blast through via PlayStation Network, where you can choose to play as either a soldier or a mutant. The main multiplayer mode, Extermination, sees soldiers try to infiltrate the island of Katorga-12 to exterminate the mutants that now reside there.

If you're playing on the side of the soldiers you must activate beacons along the way to eradicate the nearby creatures and open up the next area. The third beacon is in the creatures' hive, and successfully activating it will destroy their hive and win the battle. If you're playing as the monsters, the goal is simple: seek out and destroy the island invaders.

The second mode in Singularity is called Creatures versus Soldiers, where two sides battle it out for supremacy. It's fast, gory, insanely addictive and offers up a different kind of experience to fans of first person shooters. If, however, you're a newcomer to the genre, then there is nothing more pleasing than taking on the role of a monster and hunting down other players across PlayStation Network.
