Cleaning up crime

Story

Cleaning up crime

Dead To Rights: Retribution is a fast-paced crime drama on PS3 that puts you in control of vice cop Jack Slate and his canine companion, Shadow. Packing in equal parts gunfights and hand-to-hand combat, Retribution takes place in Grant City, a once booming place now rotten to the core thanks to crime, greed and corruption.

Playing as Jack your task is to fight and take down the shadowy figures running the syndicates wreaking havoc on the streets of the city. Fans of the Dead To Rights series released on both PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable) are in for a treat too as the story explains just how Jack and his dog, Shadow, first came together to fight crime.

The streets of Grant City

Presentation

The streets of Grant City

Thanks to slick lighting and a taut storyline Dead To Rights: Retribution's city oozes atmosphere as you traverse its many darkened streets and alleys fighting hordes of gang members and their leaders. Each area of the city features different gangs all with different looks.

For example, in one area you will face the Triads who sport horrifying make-up and bizarre clothing. In another, you will come across gangs of bikers decked out in chains and covered in tattoos wielding heavy artillery such as rocket launchers and powerful shotguns.

Aside from the streets of Grant City you will also get the chance to explore the police station where Jack works and a whole host of other locations including skyscrapers and a rusty train yard where you find yourself pursuing a gang leader across rooftops and eventually onto the roof of a speeding train.

When controlling Shadow in stealth mode the game takes on an entirely different look too because you can sense a human's heart rate and whether or not they're getting anxious because they know you're lurking in the dark. If you're looking for a great story, lots of action and the chance to take control of a hardened cop and his canine partner on PS3, then look no further than Dead To Rights: Retribution.

One man and his dog

Gameplay

One man and his dog

Playing through Dead To Rights: Retribution is a mixture of cover-based shooting and melee combat. While there are loads of weapons at your disposal including pistols, sub-machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket launchers, your real skills lie in your ability to dole out punishing kicks and punches to enemies foolish enough to get close to you.

By combining the Triangle and Square buttons you can perform devastating combos that can floor weaker enemies in an instant. When faced with some of the game's tougher opponents, you will have to think a little faster on your feet by using blocks, counter attacks and grabs before finally finishing them off with a special slow motion attack that is only triggered when their health is low enough. You also have the ability to slow down time by pressing the L button, which is perfect for disarming assailants and wounding enemies with precise shots.

Aside from controlling Jack throughout the game you also take on the role of Shadow the dog in some of Retribution's stealth sections. Here, the goal is to remain as silent as possible while you manoeuvre through levels picking off enemies and dragging their bodies out of sight so as not to be spotted by the remaining patrolling guards.

This shift in gameplay offers up a well earned break from the frantic combat and gunfights when in control of Jack because you can take your time playing through them as you lure enemies closer to you using Shadow's bark.
