THQ braves ancient curses and trap-filled tombs to bring you its latest stunning character-action adventure
The myths and legends of Ancient Egypt have provided inspiration for a raft of videogames over the years, with unleashed curses and treasure-laden tombs staple fare for many a platformer. So it's refreshing to see the oft-plundered genre getting something of a unique treatment in THQ's latest.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy bases its puzzle 'n' platform adventure loosely around the more familiar aspects of Egyptian lore, with geographical and historical references aplenty, as well as some nice new twists in the tale. Playing as the hero of the title initially, you'll gradually unravel a story of conspiracy and dark magic, and embark on an epic quest to retrieve the stolen mystical crowns of Egypt. And you won't just be taking on the bad guys as charismatic character Sphinx; you'll also step into the bandaged form of the Mummy for some slapstick style exploration along the way.
Essentially a platform adventure in the same vein as Ratchet & Clank, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy sends you in search of said treasure, whilst throwing a diverse collection of goons at you to scupper your progress in a variety of ways. Fortunately, Sphinx has a rather large arsenal which can be used to see-off any would-be attackers, including a magical blade, possession spells and multi-purpose darts for dispensing with enemies from a distance. The Mummy has slightly less sophisticated methods when it comes to dealing with the bad guys, but they're certainly no less effective for it. Being undead, Mummy is indestructible, so you can set fire to him, electrocute him, squash him flat - you name it, you can do it to the hapless walking cadaver. You're not in control of switching between characters (the game dictates which you'll be, and when), but you get a fair old crack of the whip with both. Exploring five huge, diverse worlds, you'll come across a huge range of unique characters on your quest, and traverse landscapes with the help of magic portals.
- Play as magic-touting demigod Sphinx, or the bumbling Mummy, and utilise their individual skills
- Fend-off enemies with an impressive range of weaponry; Sphinx is armed with ice darts, acid darts, bouncing darts, spells and a magic blade
- Explore 5 huge worlds on your adventures
- Gain new abilities and skills as you progress
