Read on for eu.playstation.com's picks for the games of 2007, on PLAYSTATION 3
2007 was a great year for games. The launch of PS3 in March introduced entertainment fans to a world of next generation fun unlike anything ever seen before, with huge, living game worlds, stunning High Definition visuals and Artificial Intelligence so realistic it could probably finish your morning sudoku before you'd even opened the newspaper. Here are just some of the highlights of 2007 on PLAYSTATION 3.
Resistance: Fall of ManDeveloped by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the peerless Ratchet & Clank series, Resistance: Fall of Man is a completely different kind of game to anything Insomniac have done before. A first person shooter set in an alternate 1951 where the Second World War never happened, Resistance sees you take control of Sergeant Nathan Hale as he battles invading alien forces across the backdrop of a war-torn Britain under siege. Packed with the kind of inventive weapons Insomniac is known for, and with a compelling story and multiplayer play for up to 40 players, Resistance: Fall of Man is one game you're not going to want to miss.
MotorStormThe first next generation foray for Evolution Studios, creators of the WRC series, MotorStorm made mud fun in 2007. A racing game with attitude, MotorStorm sees you getting down and dirty in the mire in fast-paced driving action with multiple vehicle types and open ended routes throughout the courses. The physics are spot on and multiplayer driving has never been this much fun, so hurry up and get involved.
Guitar Hero IIIBuilding on the success of the previous games in the series, Guitar Hero III ups the ante by adding a new battle mode, as well as guitar duels against legends such as Slash from Guns n' Roses and Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine. Add to this a brand new tracklist featuring songs by artists as diverse as Weezer, The Beastie Boys and Bloc Party and you've got the ingredients for one of the best music games of 2007.
WarhawkSeemingly coming from nowhere, Warhawk turned out to be one of 2007's best online multiplayer games thanks to its fast and furious 32 player action, creating epic battles across huge, gorgeous, expansive maps. Endlessly customisable, with an intuitive learning curve and great weapons, Warhawk is a must for aerial combat fans everywhere.
Super Stardust HDAt first glance a deceptively simply PLAYSTATION Network download, Super Stardust HD presents some of the most rewarding pick-up-and-play fun you can have with your PS3 as you control a ship battling its way through asteroids and wave after wave of alien enemies. Jaw-dropping 1080p true High Definition visuals and an incredibly addictive game mechanic make Super Stardust HD more than worth its bargain PSN price.
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of DestructionThe robot and lombax duo who need no introduction returned this year in their biggest, boldest and best-looking adventure yet. Featuring an entire arsenal worth of new weapons (including what is surely the year's greatest weapon, the Groovitron disco ball grenade), huge, breathtaking levels and a story that fizzes with humour and
excitement, this is another brilliant instalment in one of the best series on PlayStation.
Call of Duty 4: Modern WarfareThe Call of Duty series returns with a new setting and a whole host of new features to ensure it's still one of the best tactical first person shooters around. While the single player mode is great fun, multiplayer is where the game really shines, with a compelling class system, experience points and unique rewards that will keep you coming back again and again.
Uncharted: Drake's FortuneNaughty Dog, creators of the Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter series go next generation with this rip-roaring adventure romp that follows the adventures of modern day treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he searches for the fabled lost gold of El Dorado. Featuring some of the best graphics yet seen on PS3, a pulpy, character driven story of high adventure and intrigue and shamelessly fun gameplay, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune adds up to an incredibly polished package that truly shows off the potential of PS3.
The Orange BoxA single disc containing Half Life 2, its two episodic sequels, the online extravaganza that is Team Fortress 2
and brand new mind-bending first person puzzle game Portal? Valve, with this Orange Box you are really spoiling us. Simply put, any single one of the games contained here is worthy of a full price purchase; the fact that they're all bundled together means you'd be crazy to miss out.
So there you have it, a great year for games and for PLAYSTATION 3.
