Everyone loves a good sing-song, and there's no better place to do it than on your PlayStation.
2004 saw the release of the original SingStar, and social gaming was never the same again. The simple premise - microphones that anyone can use, along with singalong versions of popular songs with the original videos - proved to be an instant smash hit, receiving a BAFTA award for originality as well as critical acclaim and impressive sales figures. Now with the release of SingStar for PlayStation 3, SingStar is bigger than ever before thanks to the SingStore, an ever-expanding online song database that lets you get the songs you want, when you want. But there's still a massive collection of songs available for PlayStation 2 owners everywhere. Here's the rundown of what's out now...
SingStar
The original, and the game that started the phenomenon, SingStar is an eclectic mix of songs, meaning there's something for everyone regardless of taste. Whether you favour the retro cheese of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up or the all-out rock of Motorhead's Ace Of Spades, SingStar is sure to get you singing.
SingStar Party
Following up on the success of SingStar, SingStar Party put together a playlist of sure-fire party starters guaranteed to break the ice at any social gathering, ranging from Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun to Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out.
SingStar 80s
Channeling the spirit of the decade that taste forgot, SingStar 80s features a wide selection of 80s hits from the stadium rock of Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is to the pop-rap of Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby.
SingStar Rocks!
SingStar had featured rock songs before, but SingStar Rocks! saw the series slip into its leathers, grow its hair out and chuck a TV out of the window with a tracklist featuring bands like Nirvana, Kings of Leon, Queens of the Stone Age and Thin Lizzy.
SingStar Anthems
Camping it up like never before, SingStar Anthems is a collection of the glitziest, ritziest, most fabulous songs that you can imagine, ranging from Gloria Gaynor's belting I Will Survive, to the saucy It's Raining Men by The Weather Girls.
SingStar Legends
Paying homage to some of the greatest legends ever to grace a stage and pick up a microphone SingStar Legends has you singing along with greats such as David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Elton John.
SingStar Pop Hits
Returning to the "something for everyone" idea, SingStar Pop Hits takes in a broad spectrum of top current artists, including Nelly Furtado, Girls Aloud, Rihanna and Britney Spears.
SingStar 90s
Reviving some old favourites, SingStar 90s features such end of the century classics as MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This, Radiohead's Creep and Friday I'm in Love by The Cure.
And there's more, including the smooth grooves of SingStar R n' B, the histrionics of SingStar Bollywood and of course, SingStar PS3, the game that takes singing into the next generation. Now, the songs on the disc are just the tip of the iceberg, as the SingStore gives you access to hundreds of new songs for a minimal fee each. You can also create a profile page with a picture of yourself, a list your favourite bands and songs and your high scores for all to admire in the MySingStar Online section. Other users can also leave comments for you and you can upload video clips and photos of you and your friends as you sing yourself hoarse to your media gallery.
So if you're new to SingStar, there's never been a better time to get involved. Grab some mics and some friends and get the party started!
