The Spoken Word

PSP™

Download and enjoy audio stories playable on PSP.

Audio books and dramas have undergone a revolution in the last few years. The arrival of media devices, like PSP, has created an ever expanding audience hungry for entertainment. Meeting this ever growing appetite are hundreds of websites, offering audio content from upcoming and established authors and script writers.

Content via the web has allowed aspiring writers and story enthusiasts to reduce the cost of producing and airing works. The result is a wealth of easily accessible stories to explore.

If you're fan of classic literature, LibriVox.org is a good first port of call for older, out of copyright work. Nearly 200 titles have already been recorded and as many again are in the pipeline.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
by Lewis Carroll
In this childrens' classic, a young girl named Alice embarks on a wondrous and surreal journey when she follows a white rabbit into a burrow to a land of talking creatures, never-ending tea parties and playing cards holding court.

Podiobooks.com offers free, serialised books for download. Over 80 titles are currently available spanning a range of genres.

How to Succeed in Evil
by Patrick McLean
Edwin Windsor is an evil efficiency consultant but his egomaniacal employers rarely listen to his advice. Frustrated, Edwin decides to set up shop for himself and carve out his own evil empire. This dark comedy satirises the traditional film and comic villain.

For those interested in short stories and readings, ThoughtAudio.com has a range of classic, historical and philosophical pieces for download.

My Lord Bag of Rice, The Tongue-Cut Sparrow, and
The Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher Lad
translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki
These Japanese Fairy Tales were translated in 1908. Although not literal translations, having been Westernised to a certain degree, each story is a charming piece that combines magical creatures with the lives of normal humans.

Other audio sites of note include the science fiction short stories from escapepod.org and the macabre tales from its horror sibling pseudopod.org. Both sites, like many in this emerging area of entertainment are fan run, relying on the dedication and support of their contributors and donations from listeners.

So next time you take a trip or if you just want to relax with a good story, it is worth checking out one of the thousands of tales available.
