Set in 1970, the game serves as the missing link in the epic Metal Gear saga, as you learn more about characters in the Metal Gear universe such as Para-Medic, Major Zero and Sigint while witnessing Big Boss's greatest tragedy - a loss that sets into motion the events of later games in the Metal Gear Solid timeline.
