Gran Turismo 4 is due to arrive in November which, if you're a big GT fan, seems like a very long way away. Fortunately, you don't have to wait that long for your next GT fix; Gran Turismo 4: "Prologue" is an 'Advanced Skills School' designed to give you a tantalising taste of GT4's sublime gameplay, while simultaneously schooling you in the finer points of precision driving.
Prologue's main game mode is 'School' mode, which is made up of a series of increasingly challenging tutorials. School mode is structured rather like a board game; you begin in one corner and work your way around the board one square (Lesson) at a time. Between them, the Lessons are designed to improve every facet of your driving abilities, from the basics of steering, accelerating and braking through to advanced overtaking techniques, conserving fuel and using opponents' slipstreams to get the competitive edge. The Lessons are occasionally interspersed with 'Coffee Breaks', bonus stages that you don't need to complete in order to progress but which further test your control of Prologue's shiny, shiny vehicles.
For each Lesson or Coffee Break, you're given a specific vehicle, but once you've successfully completed the task at hand, that vehicle is added to your garage and you can then race against friends with it in Prologue's Arcade mode. The Arcade mode features five sumptuous tracks taken from the forthcoming Gran Turismo 4, including the visually arresting New York Street course and the new Grand Canyon rally stage.
In addition to the driving masterclass that is School mode and the classic GT Arcade mode, Prologue features a wealth of extras sure to get GT fans' engines running, including a GT4 trailer, a 'Making of GT4' video (housed on a separate disc to the main game) and more besides. As an intense training programme for GT4 and a behind-the-scenes look at what's sure to be one of the year's biggest games, Prologue is an essential addition to the library of any hardcore GT fan. Roll on November...
